Community Memorial Health System is proud to announce our 2018 1st quarter DAISY Award honoree – Shirley Barela, RN!

Created in 1999, the DAISY Award is a very special recognition that honors extraordinary nurses who demonstrate clinical expertise, provide skillful, compassionate care, and go above and beyond for patients and family members.

Shirley Barela, RN, joined the Community Memorial Health System (CMHS) nursing team over 38 years ago.  She currently works in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit and was nominated for the DAISY Award by a patient who spent an afternoon there recovering following an out-patient procedure.  “I had an out-patient procedure done and was sent to the Coronary ICU for recovery as the regular recovery area was full,” said the patient.  “Shirley was my nurse there and she was by far the most compassionate, hard working, and professional nurse I have ever had.”

The patient experienced a challenging recovery with significant pain and nausea, but Shirley was there every step of the way providing medical care and emotional support.  Even as her break approached, Shirley took extra care to ensure that the patient would be closely monitored.  “I heard her relay everything to the new nurse,” the patient recalled.  “Every little detail about my procedure and everything that was bothering me, including that my back was sore from the position I was in during the procedure.”

As the patient’s difficult recovery continued, Shirley managed her symptoms effectively and compassionately, ensuring that both the patient and her concerned family members were as comfortable as possible throughout the whole process.  When the time came for the patient to be released, Shirley made a “care pack” of essential items for her drive home – a gesture that proved to be extremely useful.

But it wasn’t just the patient who nominated Shirley that benefitted from her care.  “I was close enough to see that she put the same amount of effort into her other patients and was an excellent communicator with other staff.”

What topped off the whole experience for the patient was the personal phone call she received from Shirley that evening checking on how she was feeling.  “I’ve had a lot of great nurses,” said the patient.  “But Shirley is bar far the most amazing nurse I have ever encountered.  She is the kind of nurse every patient dreams about having!”

Shirley was recently honored by health system leadership, physicians, and her peers with an award presentation at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.  Please join us in congratulating her on this incredible achievement and thanking her for her service to our patients.

Congratulations Shirley! I never had the privilege to work side by side with you but I did have the privilege of knowing you. You always had a smile on you and greeted everyone that came in contact with you. Again Congratulations 👍🏻👏🏽😊
