Community Memorial Health System Honors Daisy Award Recipient
Community Memorial Health System is proud to announce our 2017 4th quarter DAISY Award honoree – Daphne Hodges, RN!
Created in 1999, the DAISY Award is a very special recognition that honors extraordinary nurses who demonstrate clinical expertise, provide skillful, compassionate care, and go above and beyond for patients and family members.
Daphne Hodges is a wound, ostomy, and continence nurse who joined the Community Memorial Hospital team almost five years ago and cares for patients in various stages of recovery on all floors of the hospital. She was nominated for the DAISY Award by Mae Waugh Barrios, the daughter of a patient who was rushed to CMH from Ojai for emergency treatment of a life-threatening bacterial infection. Following four successful surgeries, Perry Waugh was placed under Daphne’s care.
“Her reputation as a wound, ostomy, and continence nurse preceded her,” said Mae Waugh Barrios, “but upon meeting and getting to know her, she proved to be far more impressive than our expectations.”
Daphne used several techniques to help heal Perry’s wounds, and according to Mae, she did so with a level of professionalism and compassion that made Perry feel at ease despite the challenging location of his wounds. Her presence helped keep his spirits high during his time at CMH – the two often bantered back and forth and shared jokes during his treatments. When the time came for Perry to continue his recovery as a swing patient at Ojai Valley Community Hospital (OVCH), Daphne helped to quell his fears about leaving too soon.
But it wasn’t just Perry who benefitted from Daphne’s care. Both Mae and her sister felt immensely supported by her throughout the duration of Perry’s recovery and stayed in regular contact during the times that Mae had to return home to Massachusetts. When Mae happened to be visiting Perry at OVCH as the Thomas Fire roared into the valley, Daphne called to make sure Mae and her infant daughter were okay, and later brought toys for the baby to play with.
“Daphne is overwhelmingly deserving of this DAISY Award, not just because of her excellence in her field, but also for her humanity and demonstrations of such kindness to my family,” said Mae. “I know I have Daphne to thank for my Dad’s speedy and complete recovery, and her care transformed an unnerving situation into something manageable we were able to overcome.”
Daphne was recently honored by health system leadership, physicians, and her peers with a celebration at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. Please join us in congratulating her on this incredible achievement and thanking her for her service to our patients.
